How 4G CCTV works
There are two approaches. A 4G camera has a SIM slot built in and connects to mobile data directly. Alternatively, a 4G SIM router creates a WiFi/LAN network from a mobile SIM, and you connect any normal WiFi camera, IP camera or NVR to it. Both let you view live and recorded footage on your phone from anywhere.

Check 4G signal before buying
Network quality determines how quickly live view opens and whether alerts reach your phone. Test the intended operator at the exact mounting point, preferably at the planned height and at different times of day. A phone showing 4G is a useful first check, but stable upload performance matters because the camera sends video out to the internet. Metal sheds, thick walls and low-lying areas can weaken reception.
Choose mains, battery or solar power
A built-in SIM solves the internet problem, not the power problem. Use a mains-powered 4G camera where electricity is dependable and longer recording is required. For an off-grid farm, plot or temporary site, consider a 4G solar CCTV camera. Solar models need unshaded daylight and are commonly optimised for motion-event recording, so confirm the recording mode before purchase.
Storage and data — plan for both
4G cameras usually record to a microSD card, so choose an endurance-grade CCTV microSD card built for 24×7 loop recording — ordinary phone cards wear out fast. On the data side, continuous streaming uses mobile data, so pick a plan with enough allowance, or set the camera to record locally and only stream when you check in.

Does it record without data?
Many models can continue recording supported events to microSD or an NVR during a data interruption, but behaviour varies. Remote live view, cloud functions and instant phone alerts require connectivity, so verify the model’s offline-recording specification.
How much data does it use?
