How Many CCTV Cameras Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Planning Guide

Buy too few CCTV cameras and you leave blind spots; buy too many and you waste money and storage. The right number isn’t a guess — it comes from walking your property and covering the points that matter. Here’s the simple method installers use.

How Many CCTV Cameras Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Planning Guide

Start with entry points, not rooms

Intruders come through doors, gates and windows — so cover those first. List every way someone could enter: the main gate, front door, back door, side entrance, terrace access. Each entry point deserves one camera aimed to capture a clear face as someone approaches. Get these right and you’ve covered 80% of the value.

Then add coverage zones

Next, think about open areas you want to watch: the compound or driveway, the living room, the shop floor, the billing counter, the parking area. One well-placed camera can often cover a whole zone. Position it in a corner, high up, looking across the space rather than straight down.

Typical camera counts

Property Typical cameras Recorder
1–2 BHK flat 2–3 4-channel DVR/NVR
Independent house 4–6 4 or 8-channel
Small shop 3–4 4-channel
Retail store / showroom 6–8 8-channel
Office / warehouse 8–16 16-channel

Match the recorder to the count

Recorders come in fixed channel counts — 4, 8, 16, 32. Always buy one size up from your current camera count so you have room to add cameras later. A 4-channel HD DVR suits most homes; larger sites need an 8 or 16-channel IP NVR. Buying a recorder with spare channels now saves replacing the whole unit later.

The camera type matters as much as the count

Four well-chosen cameras beat eight poorly placed ones. A camera watching a gate needs good night vision and enough resolution to catch a face — see our resolution guide to match megapixels to distance. For a full walkthrough of every buying decision, start with our CCTV buyer’s guide.

Don’t forget storage for the whole system

More cameras means more footage, which fills your hard disk faster. A 4-camera home is comfortable on a 1–2TB hard disk; an 8-camera store may want 2–4TB for a couple of weeks of history. Our storage days guide helps you size the disk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add cameras later?
Yes — as long as your recorder has free channels. That’s why we suggest buying one size up on the DVR/NVR.

Should every room have a camera?
No. Cover entries and shared/valuable areas. Bedrooms and bathrooms are usually left uncovered for privacy.

One 4K camera or two 2MP cameras?
For a wide area, one high-resolution camera can replace two — but two cameras remove blind spots a single angle can’t. It depends on the layout; we’re happy to advise.

Tell us your property layout on WhatsApp, or browse complete systems in our store — we’ll plan the exact camera count and recorder so you’re fully covered with nothing wasted.
