What Is a Varifocal Camera?
A fixed-lens camera has one set field of view. A varifocal camera allows the installer to narrow or widen that view within the stated lens range. Motorized varifocal models can adjust supported zoom and focus controls through the camera or recorder interface, but they do not automatically provide the rotating coverage of a PTZ camera.
| Camera type | Useful for | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| 2MP varifocal | General entrances, corridors and indoor monitoring | Lens range, low-light performance and recorder compatibility |
| 4MP varifocal | Gates, shops and areas needing more identification detail | Motorized zoom, WDR, night range, audio and storage |
| 5MP varifocal | Warehouses, wider commercial sites and detail-focused views | Network bandwidth, NVR channel support and recording capacity |
Where Varifocal CCTV Cameras Help
- Gates and driveways: tune the frame around the entry point instead of accepting a fixed wide view.
- Long corridors: narrow the viewing angle to keep more useful detail at distance.
- Warehouses and shops: adjust coverage around aisles, counters, loading areas or selected zones.
- Changing layouts: reframe a compatible motorized lens when the monitored area changes.
Start with the broad IP CCTV camera collection when a fixed lens is sufficient. For resolution-led comparison, browse 2MP IP cameras, 4MP IP cameras and 5MP IP cameras. Varifocal describes the adjustable lens; it does not by itself guarantee optical zoom level, autofocus, audio, AI detection or recorder compatibility.
